There are certain pieces of art that inspire me to do my take on it and many of them are shows and movies. 'Beef' was definitely one of those pieces. I thought the dark comedy nature of the show would fit well with a stylized illustration with a cartoon style.
This year, I took a class by Ben Eblen and we learned that we should explore the structure of our subjects before trying to execute on the final piece. We also learned that we should not only have a subject refference, we should also have a style reference.
Once I thought I had a good grasp on the structure of the characters and the style I'd like to achieve, I started with the layout and general structure of the piece. I wanted the character traits to be exemplified in the stances of the characters: Ali Wong's character, a strong imposing figure and Steven Yeun's character, living in a constant state of quiet rage.
Once I had the foundation set, I paid great attention to the flats and how I set them up, not only in the foreground but also the background. In this case, I wanted the colors to reflect a kind of darkness of the characters contrasted with the brightness of LA.
The final piece turned out to be one of my favorite pieces and I look forward to creating more like this as a concept artist.
